Here's a tutorial on how to make aged paper in Photoshop Elements 2.0 (may work in previous versions too... not sure)
These instructions sound weird, but follow through and trust me, it works...
1 - Go back to the EFFECTS tab and choose WOOD (PINE)
2 - Look in the LAYERS tab. Voila, there's a paper-like texture. But it still looks too new. You need to add wear-and-tear.
3 - You can now DELETE all the layers EXCEPT the "paper" one.
4 - Choose the PAINTBRUSH.
5 - Right click the icon at the far left of the brush property bar (w/ the size and such on it), and choose RESET TOOL.
6 - go into the BRUSH SELECTION pull-down bar thing. (VB g33ks would call it a combo-box).
7 - Select WET MEDIA brushes
8 - You want BRUSH 74 (or the "Oil Medium Brush Wet Edges")
9 - hit 'd' on the keyboard to default the colours. You want to make sure the colour you use is BLACK.
10 - This tool will cause the 'wear' lines. Create a jagged, warn-down edge around the paper.
11 - I am using a 500x500px canvas in this demo using size 74 brush. You'll want a fairly large brush in order to leave a feathery-like edge.
12 - MAKE SURE YOU DO IT IN
ONE
continuous line. The second you do another it will leave a darker mark where you left off!!
13 - Select JUST the paper and put it on a new layer. The easiest way to do this is to MAGIC WAND the border, right-click, and choose "SELECT INVERSE"
14 - To add a redish-brown tinge to your paper, you must BURN it.
15 - Select the BURN tool.
16 - You'll want a HUGE brush. For my 500x500 canvas, I'm using a 332px brush. This will cause a smoother burn effect.
17 - Select the MIDTONES range, and make sure your exposure is set to 100%.
18 - Go in a left-to-right pattern over the paper to darken it evenly
19 - Now go over a few parts of the paper to add a more random wear pattern.
There you go. Your very own piece of Digitally created, and digitally-aged paper. The font I used for the PREVIEW was called "Calligraph421 BT"
